Research is an integral part of the life and work of Catherine House Inc. As an organisation that values best practice, informed models of service and keen participation in any rigorous debate on homelessness – a curious and intelligent approach to research is essential. Our approach is always based on the experience of clients, the work of staff and grounded in relevant theory and research studies in the field.
Catherine House has been engaged in two recent well-regarded research projects - ‘Like a Mouse on a Wheel’ and the joint research project with Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) ‘Reclaiming Myself After Child Sex Abuse’. Both studies continue to inform our practice and have been widely used, and acclaimed, within the human service sector and beyond.
Research assists with future planning and interaction with government departments and the wider homelessness sector. Since 2006, informal research has been carried out in relation to the potential establishment of a Catherine House Social Enterprise. In 2008, the director and one other staff member, attended the Social Enterprise World Forum in Edinburgh, Scotland. The director also took the opportunity whilst overseas to visit social enterprise sites in the UK and USA, as part of the ongoing research into the potential setting up of such a project. In January 2009, a 'Think Tank' of prominent business people met with the director and other Catherine House staff to deliberate on research findings to date and to come to a view whether or not to proceed with the venture. The 'Think Tank' will prepare a report on its recommendation for the April meeting of the Catherine House Board.
Catherine House has a demonstrated track record in collaborative research involving industry partners, government (local, state and federal), community organisations and university research departments. Research will therefore continue to be a much valued and keen aspect of our work and practice.
